MUGEN – meaning “Unlimited” – engines have famously powered hundreds of race and championship winners since the original company’s formation in 1973, from one-make series to F1. Most of these have been with HONDA-based products and, although independent, the company has had a long and close relationship with this highly-regarded and inventive automotive manufacturer.

From 1992 to 1999, while Honda took a sabbatical from Grand Prix racing, MUGEN supplied its own-prepared and developed F1 engines to the Footwork, Lotus, Ligier, Prost and Jordan teams, scoring 4 famous wins.

MUGEN EURO was established in the UK in 2007 to create a presence ‘on the ground’ in Europe and is headed by Mr Satoshi Katsumata, Managing Director of parent company M-TEC in Japan, as President and Mr Hiroki Toyoda as Vice-President in charge of day-to-day UK operations. Both are extremely experienced in motorsport and in powertrain design and development, and are supported by a locally recruited workforce. Key to the facility in Northampton is the mighty F1-standard transient electric dynamometer located in a temperature and humidity-controlled test cell and capable of extreme accuracy and repeatability from 1,000 to 20,000 rpm and up to 1,000PS.

Initial concentration has been on sales of the ‘engine of choice’ for virtually all CN competitors, this being the HONDA Civic Type R-based K20A 2.0L 4-cyl V-TEC unit. In particular, MUGEN EURO has been the official distributor of the FD2 version, previously obtainable only in the Japanese domestic market and of significantly higher performance than its European FN2 cousin. Since start-up, over 400 of these engines have been supplied for CN, Touring Car and Single-Seater racing, plus Rallying and Hill-Climbs. Engines can be supplied either as standard base units for preparation companies to tune, or fully race or rally prepared with MUGEN branding. MUGEN EURO maintains a substantial replacement parts inventory and operates technical support , including trackside, and a customer service desk.

In 2009, MUGEN Original Products were introduced to the UK market via approved retailers for a range of HONDA models including the Civic, S2000 and the Integra (others such as Accord by request). Brought in direct from our parent company in Japan these much sought-after, motorsport-oriented premium products are designed and produced exclusively for HONDA models and distributed through specially appointed UK Retailers. Currently we are investigating how we might be able to promote this business through SPEED EUROSERIES and in doing so to be able to further extend MUGEN support.

MUGEN EURO very much supports the SPEED EUROSERIES’ initiative to run alongside the prestigious Le Mans Series and has worked with Stuart and Oli McCrudden and with HONDA Motorsport Europe to provide credibility, practical assistance and a stable engine and parts supply platform from which the Series can grow and prosper. As well as backing its customers, the Company endorses the aims of SPEED EUROSERIES to successfully promote affordable sports prototype racing. We believe that this can provide competitive and enjoyable International motorsport in its own right but also act as a conduit for those with major endurance racing and Le Mans aspirations.
