SPEED EuroSeries News

The opening rounds of the 2012 SPEED EuroSeries for CN sports prototypes took place at Le Castellet over the weekend with an 18 car grid putting on the show for fans at the ELMS meeting. Both races were won by Italian Ivan Bellarosa’s Wolf GB08, pushed hard by the Darren Burke/Duncan Williams Juno CN2012 over 180 minutes.

In netting both pole positions, Bellarosa made his intentions for the season clear and despite a drive-through penalty in race 1 and a collision with the fellow Wolf of French team, DB Auto in race 2, he set the fastest laps in both races to head the championship table by 8 points from Burke & Williams. Series newcomer, Formula Ford Festival winner and McLaren Autosport Award nominee, Chrissy Palmer and teammate Sarah Reader finished their first race as a duo in third in race one. Italian Gugliemo Belotti (Avelon Formula Wolf), an experienced endurance touring car driver and Italian prototype racer, picked up a great third in race 2.

New Season – New Faces

31 drivers turned out for the season opener with, a very strong showing and proof that the SPEED EuroSeries CN sports proto grid is growing in this its second year. Operating out of the brand new Le Castellet pit complex, SPEED competitors arrived at the sweltering French circuit full of expectation with numerous new-look cars, teams and several new faces in the paddock.

A new structure for 2012 has seen the introduction of a Classic Class for older chassis and saw the Luchini of experienced Italian racer Ranieri Randaccio & SCI Racing contesting the class honours with Frenchman Richard Mori (Ibanez Racing Ligier JS49) and the Norma M20 of ‘Philippes’ Macé and Yschard (SPYD Racing). The latter pairing fared best over the weekend, taking home both trophies with a 13th and 7th placed finish overall in what is set to be a competitive and cost-effective race category joined by several more contestants at the next meeting at Spa Francorchamps.

The ‘Elite’ category features a blend of current designs and chassis configurations which are testament to the innovative and competitive arena of the CN formula. Italian manufacturer, Wolf, has led the way in carbon fibre chassis design with its GB08 which the more experienced French designers, Ligier & Norma, have followed with success. Against these the British marque, Juno Racing, has proved remarkably successful in maintaining a tubular-framed chassis with developed aero designs which make it a serious threat. Following a winter of testing and development, competitors arrived at the Paul Ricard circuit ready to prove their efforts.

Free practice and qualifying gave fans and competitors alike the opportunity to size up the class of 2012. Last season’s strong finisher Bellarosa was rapid in the first session but Darren Burke proved his quality by finding nearly a second between free practice and qualifying to keep the Italian keen, both cars sporting a new-look rear wing configuration which clearly works. Ultimately though, Bellarosa took pole from Burke by over a second with rapid newcomers Olivier Porta and William Cavailhaes (Ibanez Racing Service Wolf) a very good third ahead of Reader and Palmer.

The G-Cat Racing Wolf of former Historic Formula One racer, Rowland Kinch, was 5th fastest in its first outing. Team owner Greg Caton has only had the car for a fortnight with neither driver getting more than a couple of hours behind the wheel before the race weekend; Caton is positive that simple developments can be made to take the car further up the grid. France’s Anthony Gandon and German Jens Petersen, both new racers with the SPEED EuroSeries, arrived with Team TFT’s Norma M20CF and impressed with 6th place in qualifying. The excellent Team TFT won both SPEED races at Spa in 2011 and with a full challenge coming from the Spa round of SPEED onwards, looks to be challenging in 2012. With a skeleton crew, the pair came in just ahead of the Guglielmo Belotti-driven Wolf and the first Springbox Concept Ligier JS53, piloted by former F1 and sportscar star Philippe Alliot & promising French racer Amandine Foulard. The DB Auto team, another new outfit in the paddock brought their Wolf home 9th with Daniel Bassora and former SPEED UK racer Damien Delafosse at the wheel. The Gianluca Pizutti/Claudio Francisi Wolf closed out the top 10.

Race 1 started soon after qualifying – too soon for some, who were forced to start from the pit lane. Bellarosa was caught out by Burke at the start too, the Englishman getting ahead as they squeezed towards the first corner but the Wolf was soon ahead. Sector times saw the Juno quick down the long Mistral straight but the Wolf was quicker round the slow corners, Bellarosa driving sensationally to extend a sizeable lead. An error by the Italian team which saw Pane and others make a mandatory stop outside the pit window offered a slim chance to the Juno, with Duncan Williams at the wheel for the final 30 minutes but despite an excellent stint, he was unable to close the gap to the Wolf which finished over a minute clear. Third place was sealed by the Juno of Reader/Palmer, a great showing for the first time out by Palmer and the rapid Reader.

Race 2 saw a hectic start early on the Sunday morning. At the rolling start Reader suffered from gearbox problems which meant she dropped back from the car in front as they approached the green lights meaning Williams and Bellarosa got away as cars around Sarah hesitated then passed her before the startline, the Belotti and Kinch cars benefitting inadvertently. Williams kept Bellarosa in sight over the first 30 minutes before handing over to Burke who began to reel in the Italian, The paddock held its breath when Bellarosa and the DB Auto car came together; both cars were stranded mid-track for what seemed a very long time with the Team Excool Juno getting closer. When Bellarosa finally untangled himself and set off, the gap was just 20 seconds and closing. Over the last few laps Burke was charging hard and closed down to 17 seconds but simply did not have enough time to make up the difference.

Sarah Reader was running a strong 3rd after the start line woes but in a final twist of a tough weekend for the TFL Racing team, suffered a loosening bolt on a throttle pedal which saw her drop back through the pack over the final laps to finish 11th handing third to the strong showing Belotti. The impressive G-Cat Wolf of Kinch/Latif was fourth with Gandon/Petersen fifth. Despite the collision with Bellarosa the Bassora/Delafosse Wolf was sixth ahead of the Mace/Yschard Norma with impressive lady racer Ines Taittinger and veteran racer Philip Plainsance just behind. Pizzuti/Francisi and Antonio Mastroberardino, both Avelon Formula Wolf runners, were just ahead of the Reader/Palmer car with the Ligier JS51 of Dominique Wozniak and Jarno Violette closing out the finishers.

Bellarosa’s enthusiastic celebrations at the end of the first race saw the car pirouetting some tasty doughnuts. The next race is in Belgium at the iconic Spa Francorchamps circuit where waffles are the snack of choice. Will Bellarosa’s races be as sweet? Stay tuned to find out.

Entries for the second meeting of the season, the showpiece meeting at the legendary Spa Francorchamps circuit as part of the brand new FIA World Endurance Championship, are going fast as drivers and teams seek to secure their place on what looks like being the biggest grid of CN sports prototypes in recent times.

In 2011, 25 cars arrived at the Belgium circuit to take on the challenges of Eau Rouge, La Source, the Bus Stop and the rest of the iconic track with the Team TFT Normas of Ander Vilarino/Franck Lamana and Nick Padmore/Jean Lou Rihon taking the race wins over the weekend; Padmore and Rihon will be returning to the SPEED paddock to defend their crown in 2012 with TFT running up to three chassis in the race which is promising a strong grid.

Drivers and teams are advised to submit entry forms and registrations for the Spa event as soon as possible to ensure sufficient paddock space is allocated to them in what is going to be a very busy meeting. A limited number of extra passes for the high profile event are available through SPEED. Please contact SPEED organisers now to avoid any disappointment.

RACE ace Sarah Reader has confirmed her place as Britain’s top female racing driver with a cluster of top awards.

The 29-year-old SPEED EuroSeries driver, who began her race career as a teenager, has been handed the British Women Racing Drivers Club’s top gong at an awards ceremony at Silverstone, putting her in pole position for the coming season.

The Embassy Trophy – making Sarah the BWRDC’s overall champion of 2011 – was presented to the racing driver at a gala lunch on the back of a stunning 2011 season in the SPEED Euroseries – an international championship where she is the only woman on the grid.

And it wasn’t the only trophy Sarah, from Stratford-upon-Avon, picked up – an incredible four more followed.

Four podium finishes and fourth place overall, saw Sarah clock up more points than any other British female competing in circuit championships last year, winning her the BWRDC’s second highest honour, the Goodwin Trophy.

And Sarah’s success didn’t end there – she also won the club’s Jamieson Trophy for 2011 for notching-up the fastest average speed and the VIP Adrenalin cup for best performance in a sports racing car.

She was also one of only two drivers to be handed the BWRDC’s prestigious GoldStars Award in recognition of her continued success in international motorsport racing.

And what’s more, she’s been made patron of the BWRDC in its 50th anniversary year.

Sarah will return to the SPEED Euroseries championship when the season starts at Paul Richard in France in April, behind the wheel of Juno sports prototype car, run by the manufacturer.

“These awards are an incredible way to get set for the coming season,” Sarah said.

“I’m honoured to be a member of the BWRDC and honoured to be recognised in this way.

“I look forward to even more success in 2012!”

Sarah has been racing since the age of 17, when she started in the Caterham Academy. In 2003 she raced to third place overall in the Caterham Eurocup Roadsport class and was third overall in the Caterham CSR Masters in 2006.

Her dream is to move up a gear in the field of sports prototype racing – to compete in the Le Mans Series.

The European Le Mans Series organisers have issued the event timetable for the Le Castellet meeting which will host the opening two rounds of the 2012 SPEED EuroSeries.

The meeting has been reorganised to feature just a two day race programme with no track running on the Friday. This means that SPEED competitors will have free practice, qualifying and Race 1 on the Saturday with Race 2 taking place on the Sunday morning.

Details will be updated so please check on the Events page for any changes or bulletins.

Franco-Belge outfit SPYD RACING is the latest addition to the growing SPEED EuroSeries grid with their Ibanez Racing prepared Norma M20F.

Fresh from their CN category victory at the Gulf 12 Hours of Abu Dhabi, drivers Philippe Mace and Philippe Yschard will make their SPEED EuroSeries debut at the season opening rounds at Le Castellet at the end of the month. The team will enter the ‘Classic Class’ for older chassis designs which offers an attractive entry level to drivers looking to get into the high profile SPEED EuroSeries.

SPEED EuroSeries organiser, Oli McCrudden: “We’re delighted to welcome the team to the SPEED paddock and pleased that our initiative [the classic class] is proving popular. There are so many of the older chassis out there that are still competitive, affordable and great fun to race and it’s great to know that they will be used as they were intended rather than being confined off to track days or to sit unused in workshops.”

The Ibanez Racing team will feature three cars in the SPEED EuroSeries throughout the 2012 season with two Wolf GB08 chassis running alongside the Norma.

Autosport award nominee and Formula Ford Festival winner, Chrissy Palmer, will be pairing up with Sarah Reader in a TFL Racing Juno for the 2012 Speed EuroSeries.

Palmer, a winner of the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch in 2009 and Fortec Formula Renault racer in 2010, raced in a Juno in 2009, is keen to pursue a career in sportcar racing and sees the Speed EuroSeries as the logical choice for his career progression. The driver pairing will be running in the updated 2012 spec Juno, three of which are confirmed as participants in the 2012 SPEED EuroSeries.

G-CAT Racing has been announced as the UK agent and distributor for Wolf Racing Cars, providing an authorised outlet for the successful Wolf GB08 – an innovative sport prototype CN car with a carbon fibre chassis.

The team, owned by Greg Caton, will run the Wolf GB08 in the SPEED EuroSeries 2012 to showcase the car and expand on the success enjoyed by the Italian Avelon Formula team in 2011.

Caton holds a wealth of experience in running prototypes although historic racing is where his focus and achievements have more recently laid. Reflecting on past victories at the Spa 6 hour and Magny-Cours 3 hour races in 2007, Caton is relishing the chance to return to modern racing in a car that he says “takes engineering and aerodynamics to a whole new level within its category”.

The Wolf partnership with G-Cat Racing brings an exciting prospect for UK drivers, offering capacity to run additional cars and provide race seats. The G-Cat Racing / Wolf GB08 car will begin its testing program from the beginning of March in Italy, with full factory support.

The first CN car to be built with a carbon chassis and using technologies similar to those used in the Le Mans Series LMP 2 cars, the Wolf GB08 provides outstanding rigidity, safety and aerodynamics.

On its debut in 2010, the car took pole position and stormed to victory at the first round of the Italian Prototypes Championship – reminiscent of the epic 1977 debut that the original Walter Wolf Racing team were noted for. The car has since gone on to achieve multiple race wins in the SPEED EuroSeries and is proving to be the car to beat.

With options available for interested drivers to compete in a Wolf under the G-Cat Racing banner and for further information please contact Greg Caton on 07789 982095 or email greg@g-catracing.co.uk
