A History of SPEED…

In 2011, the SPEED EuroSeries visited Spa Francorchamps with 25 cars on the entry list. Following a fearsome testing accident on the Thursday when Joey Foster’s WFR got airborn at the top of Eau Rouge and destroyed hte catch fence on its way into the trees on the outside of the corner, the three WFR machines were withdrawn and a field of 22 started the first race.

It was the first outing in SPEED for the new carbon fibre Norma chassis and the Team TFT cars dominated the event with the Lamana/Vilarino car taking pole ahead of the Rihon/Padmore sister car. Alex Caffi and Maurizio Fratti were third in the Wolf. The two Normas would share the race wins over the weekend.

Without doubt a drivers’ favourite, the legendary Spa circuit courses through the undulating forests between Spa, Francorchamps and Stavelot.

In 1954, the first sports car Spa 1000km created a legendary event which the LMS recreates over the Spa weekend. The race’s greatest moment was perhaps in 1975 with team Bell / Pescarolo in an Alfa Romeo 33TT12. From 1982 to 1988, the 1000KM was the era of the Group C cars. Re-introduced 15 years later, the Spa 1000KMS has become one of the musts in the European Le Mans Series “1000KM” races and is the inaugural European event for the brand new FIA World Endurance Championship in 2012.
